The Manawatū Scenic Route: The Road That Takes Its Time

A gentle alternative to the hurry of State Highway 1. Roughly 170 km from Palmerston North to Sanson, then looping through Feilding, Kimbolton, and back via the Pohangina Valley. Mostly sealed backroads, rolling farmland, river flats, and the occasional small town that still has a pub with a proper fire.

I’ve driven it on quiet weekdays when the only rush is the wind moving the grass. It’s not dramatic. It’s comfortable. Good for a half-day wander or stretching a trip south without the trucks.

Start in Palmerston North if you’re coming from the north. Stock up — cafes, fuel, last supermarket. Head northeast on SH54 toward Ashhurst. The road follows the Manawatū River for a while — wide, steady, willows along the banks.

Ashhurst Bridge is a natural first stop. Old wooden structure, views up and down the river. Pull over, feel the breeze. Nothing forced, just a moment.

From there the route turns onto Pohangina Valley Road. The valley opens — green paddocks, sheep, the occasional dairy herd crossing. Drive slow; farm vehicles appear without warning.

Kimbolton sits halfway up the valley. Tiny place, a handful of cafes and a historic general store. The coffee’s honest, the scones fresh. Good spot to sit outside if the sun’s out.

Continue north to Apiti. Even quieter. The road winds through limestone country — gentle hills, limestone bluffs in places. Rata Street Cafe in Apiti does solid lunches; locals tend to know the best pie.

Loop back south via the main valley road. The Pohangina River stays close — clear water, swimming holes in summer if you’re inclined.

Feilding on the return leg. Classic country town. Saturday stock sales if you’re there on the right day, otherwise the main street has a few good pubs and bakeries. The clock tower chimes on the hour — small reminder you’re not in a hurry.

Finish back toward Sanson or Palmerston North. Easy run, flat, open.

Practical notes.

Traffic is light — mostly locals, a few tourists who know the shortcut. Fuel in Palmerston North, Feilding, or Ashhurst. Coverage holds up well; signal dips only in the deepest valley pockets. An eSIM like ANZroam keeps things simple — no hunting for café Wi-Fi when you stop for coffee.

It’s a route that doesn’t demand anything. You drive, you notice the light on the hills, you stop when something looks good. The day stretches without effort.
