State Highway 73 from Christchurch to the West Coast. About 230 km to Greymouth or Hokitika. It starts flat on the Canterbury plains — braided rivers, wide sky, sheep in paddocks. Then the land tightens. Porters Pass climbs first, around 940 meters. The road winds up through Arthur’s Pass National Park, drops through gorges, and eases out to the wetter, greener West Coast.
I’ve driven it east to west and back. Winter closes sections with snow or ice — check NZTA often. Summer brings longer days, but mist and rain can roll in without notice. Allow a full day, or two if you want to stop properly. A standard car handles it; just ease off on the descents.
Leave Christchurch early. The plains feel endless at first. Sheffield for a pie if you’re hungry — classic stop, nothing fancy.
Springfield passes quick. Then Porters Pass. Views open up — lakes like Lyndon if you glance right.
Castle Hill appears soon after. Limestone boulders scattered across tussock. Short walk among them; people linger, climbing or just sitting. The rocks look almost arranged, quiet and strange under big sky.

Arthur’s Pass village halfway. Small place — cafes, DOC center, kea sometimes on roofs. Devil’s Punchbowl track starts here. Short but steep to the waterfall — steps most of the way, mist from the drop cools you.
The road drops west after the pass. Otira Viaduct curves high over the gorge. Pull into the lookout; the bridge looks engineered for exactly this spot — clean lines against steep bush and rock.

The descent feels sharper — valleys narrow, rivers roar below. Vegetation thickens, rain forest takes over. The shift from dry east to lush west happens fast.
Practical bits.
Fuel in Christchurch or Arthur’s Pass village — gaps after that until the coast. Weather changes quick; layers, rain jacket. Signal drops in the park; an eSIM like ANZroam picks up when it can — enough for road alerts or a photo upload.
It’s not about getting across. The highway pulls you to notice — the way light hits the boulders, the sound of water under the viaduct, the slow climb where every curve reveals more mountain. Drive steady. The Alps do the rest.
